Welcome to Grave Of The Fireflies!
Believe it or not, this anime movie is capable of making a grown man cry.
What makes it even harder to handle is knowing that such a heart breaking story is true.
Though it has a very touching story, the anime movie leaves you with a giant pit in your stomach.
The story takes place in Kobe. It is a place in Japan during World War II. It is started from the grave by Seita, the protagonist of the film. He was forced to care for Setsuko, his toddler sister, during the war.
There’s something beautiful and horrible about seeing children being brave and fending for one another.
Beautiful because even at an early age, the smallest and weakest of us already have the strongest character and instinct to protect others; horrible because no child should be in life-or-death circumstances.
The two children face a great amount of hardship during the war. They lost their house and their mother in the Kobe Firebombings. Their tale is one of endless hunger, suffering, and, eventually, their own demise.
Yes, Grave of the Fireflies isn’t easy to watch. But it’s the great works of animation–or really of all film, for that matter.
There is no doubt that is a wonderful anime movie ever made. Just don’t be surprised if you need a hug when it’s over.
