Watch Young Leonardo DiCaprio in Don’s Plum!
You may never heard about about ‘Don’s Plum’. The experimental Indie movie that was never availed in the US and Canada despite featuring one of the best cast ever.
Well, after the movie was produced about 20 years ago, the co-stars, young Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire had it banned from these two nations.
This decision put them on a collision path with the others involved in the movie especially the producers. For years, they have exchanged accusations without any solution.
The movie resurfaced lately on Vimeo but the two had it pulled down causing a major uproar especially among fans who had hoped to finally watch the film.
It all started in 1996 when one popular producer, Dale Wheatley teamed up with some of the most talented Indie filmmakers in this industry to make the movie.
It was for sure one of the most unique experiments in the history of Indie filmmaking. According to Wheatley, the movie was a product of an entirely improvised process and they hoped to enjoy a lot from its anticipated popularity.
This was however not to be leaving him and his colleagues at loses. He recently launched a blog http://freedonsplum.com/ to lament about this and that is hoe the two co-stars learned that the film has resurfaced and had it pulled down.
Why the film was taken down from Vimeo
The reason given for the taking down of the film from the popular platform Vimeo is that Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire requested for the action citing the provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
Considering the fact that the two are undoubtedly among America’s best known acts of all time, many of their fans and foes alike have taken to various platform to lament about this.
It was like a relief when the video was uploaded to Vimeo by Wheatley and for it to be short-lived means that many have been left heartbroken and disappointed.
In particular, Wheatley is on record as saying that he wondered why such ‘oppression’ is still being witnessed in America in 2016. He feels that this is a suppression of the work of many other artists using an iron fist not just in the film that was made 20 years ago.
Indeed, a quick look at some of the discussions in popular online forums reveals that even though the two are celebrated in America, Canada and all over the world, the way they have handled this movie, especially the lawsuits, has not gone well with the majority of film lovers.
The Stars in the film
Don’s Plum, which was shot purely in black and white, stars a host of other celebrities including Jeremy Sisto, Kevin Connelly as well as celebrated singer Jenny Lewis. Another notable star is Rilo Kiley.
Even as many in America have only heard of it, the film debuted at the International Film Festival in Berlin in 2001. It is the same year that it was released in Europe.
This was the start of what was to become a viral movie that was being watched almost everywhere in the world. It is a pity that as the world was enjoying; those in America and in Canada could only be told about it.
This could be the reason why even 20 years later, they still have problems having it on Vimeo. The way that they were swift to notify the site and how the site responded fast to have the film taken down speaks volumes about the seriousness that the matter holds especially for the two. It remains to be seen how the other people who have been involved in the movie will react to the decision.
After Don’s Plum, young Leonardo DiCaprio has gone ahead to features in many other films most of which have worn awards. He is particularly a household name in America and this could be the explanation why many people are concerned when a movie he featured in cannot be accessible here.
There is no doubt that he is a great actor. What remains to be seen is how everything about this film will unfold and particularly, if the film will ever be available for viewing without any restrictions. The fact that it is already more than twenty years old makes people almost want to give up on it with others even suggesting that it no longer has the kind of appeal that it had when it was released.
Leonardo DiCaprio nominated for the Oscars
It is important to note that DiCaprio has been nominated for an Oscar for his role in the “The Revenant.” His lack of response to many of the issues that have been raised lately could be because he focusing on the upcoming event.
He cuts the image of someone who has put everything about Don’s Plum behind young Leonardo DiCaprio in order to focus on future success. As to whether he is open to settling the matter amicably with his friends with whom he stared I the movie, it remains to be seen as many aspects of the case remain a mystery to many.
Observers however say that any hope of the movie showing in America and Canada remain to be a mirage especially judging by the recent actions.
On his part, Dale Wheatley is determined to fight the removal of the film from Vimeo until he gets what he calls ‘justice’.
He feels that the decision to overlook copyright issues, which he thinks he has a say over, is unfair. Being the author of the material, his new resolve seems to be to fight for the freedom of Don’s Plum.
For him, the dignity and freedom of the filmmakers who came up with the movie needs to be restored so that they take pride in their work. Meanwhile, DiCaprio and Maguire as well as Vimeo seem reluctant to respond to any inquiries that touch on this matter.
